Maruia River Retreat
Murchison, New Zealand$$
Maruia River Retreat sits in the Shenandoah valley at the top of the South Island, on a 500-acre private estate of native beech forest, river frontage and mountain ranges. It is genuinely remote, roughly two hours from Nelson and three and a half from Christchurch, with its own micro-climate formed by the peaks on either side. The estate holds a 180-hectare nature reserve of high ecological significance, home to old-growth trees and rare native birds.
The retreat is built around restoration rather than activity for its own sake. Days move at an unhurried pace through guided nature walks, forest bathing and time beside the Maruia River. A dedicated wellness centre anchors the experience, with yoga in a purpose-built shala, breathwork and treatments led by resident therapists.
Food is all-inclusive and deliberately simple: fresh, seasonal and sourced as locally as possible, served in the lodge dining room or a four-season outdoor room. Movement follows the landscape, with forest and river tracks, mountain biking, kayaking and white-water rafting arranged on the rivers that run through the valley.
Recovery infrastructure is real, not decorative. There are multiple saunas including a forest sauna, an outdoor hot tub set by the river, a heated magnesium pool, and cold immersion in the river itself. The spa, recognised among the world's most extraordinary, focuses on massage and bodywork for nervous-system regulation and slow fascia work.
Accommodation is limited to seven private villas and a maximum of twelve guests, which keeps the estate quiet and uncrowded. The villas are pared back and contemporary, warmed by fireplaces and designed around simple essentials done well rather than excess.
This is a strong Verisa stay for travellers who want a genuine wellness retreat with real recovery infrastructure and deep nature immersion, in a place that is remote by design. It suits longer, slower stays and solo or couple restoration more than a family holiday. It is all-inclusive and structured, closer to a full retreat than a flexible luxury lodge.

What we love
What makes Maruia rare is how complete the recovery setup is for somewhere this remote: forest sauna, river hot tub, heated magnesium pool and genuine cold immersion in the river, all on a private estate with only seven villas. This is not a hotel with a spa bolted on. It is a full wellness retreat built around the landscape, best suited to people who want to disconnect properly rather than dip in and out.
